NAUGATUCK — Naugatuck police are stepping up enforcement of distracted driving laws this month as part of the “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” campaign.

Under state law, drivers ticketed for distracted driving face fines of $150 for the first offense, $300 for a second offense and $500 for subsequent offenses.

Police cited information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that stated 3,477 people were killed and an estimated 391,000 injured in car accidents involving distracted drivers in 2015 — a 9-percent increase in fatalities from the previous year.

Police urged drivers to pull over and park in a safe place if they need to text.
