NAUGATUCK – Middle School girls gathered at the high school last week to hone their volleyball skills ahead of the 2011 season. Twin sisters Andrea and Alexis Granahan ran the volleyball camp as part of the Parks and Recreation Department summer programs. Andrea said she and her sister, both 2010 Naugatuck High School graduates and volleyball players, wanted to start the summer camp to teach younger girls basic skills before entering high school. About 10 girls, ages 11 through 13, attended the camp. Andrea said she and her sister started high school knowing nothing about volleyball. Most of the girls at their camp had never played before either. During the two-week long program, girls learned basic passing, setting, and hitting skills, Andrea said. Andrea and Alexis designed the program while the Parks and Recreation Department provided nets, balls, and advertising.
