The NFL Draft, also known as the New York Jets BumbleFest, kicked off Thursday night. This is by far the most overblown event of the sports calendar. They’ve tried to make the draft more watchable over the last year, but there’s only so much you can do to make an inherently boring event less boring. Fans boo Roger Goodell — justifiably, of course, but it gets very uncreative — he exchanges awkward hugs with giant men who will soon hate him, Mel Kiper yells enough about every player selected or not selected to keep his hair in place, and we all wait for the Jets to screw up as they do literally every single year. There have been some incredibly enormous gaffes in Jets draft history — Ken O’Brien over Dan Marino in 1983, Blair Thomas over Emmitt Smith in 1990, Kyle Brady over Warren Sapp in 1995, and so on — and it’s only a matter of time before they make bigger fools of themselves than they already are. All I want is one good draft, because God knows this is the year they need it. I’ll find out afterwards, though, because I will not be watching.

Woodland earned its first victory of the season Monday when the Hawks knocked off Sacred Heart, 190-207, at the par-36 Oxford Greens. Woodland’s Mike Erickson was the medalist by shooting the low round of 44. Ryan Warner was close behind with a 47, while Owen Harris shot a 48 and Matt Greggis carded a 51. The Hawks dropped their first three matches of the season, including a 189-215 defeat to East Hampton last week. Erickson led Woodland in that match with a 42 while Warner shot a 45. Andy O’Dell (60) and Zach Crowell (62) rounded out the scoring for the Hawks. Woodland followed up its first win of the year with a 179-262 vicotry over Crosby on Wednesday at Oxford Greens. The Hawks fell to Watertown on Thursday 171-185. The Hawks will hit the road next week, visiting Torrington on Monday and St. Paul on Tuesday, and on Thursday they will host the second Woodland Invitational at Oxford Greens.

Naugy split its first two meets of the season this week with a loss at St. Paul and a win over Kennedy. The Greyhounds fell Monday to St. Paul, 189-204, at the par-35 Chippanee Golf Course. Naugy’s Nick Tribanas earned the medal with a 41 and was the only ‘Hound to break 50. Brendan Waldron shot a 51, Dan Capone carded a 54 and Jake Alcorace posted a 55. Naugatuck earned its first win Tuesday in a 191-235 rout of Kennedy at the par-36 Hop Brook Golf Course. Tribanas was the low man again with a 46 but two other Greyhounds broke 50. Tyler Sounanthanum posted a 47 and Capone carded a 48 while Waldron shot a 50. Naugy will host Holy Cross on Monday and Crosby on Tuesday before taking part in the Woodland Invitational on May 2.
