Letter: Time to end the silence

To the editor,

Seventeen years of silence. How could anyone, let alone trusted professionals, turn a blind eye to child sex abuse?

As the Penn State scandal continues to rock the country many are asking how this could have happened. How could former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky have gotten away with raping young boys when the first known incident occurred in 1994? There were plenty of signs, even eyewitnesses, yet nothing was done.

“We expected you just arrest people who do stuff like that,” victim one’s mom said, referring to the three-year grand jury investigation. “We didn’t realize it was going to be this difficult and take this long.”

As of Nov. 15, victim one is joined by victims two to 17 and counting. Each victim of Sandusky’s has been robbed of his boyhood by a sexual predator. Each victim will live with this trauma forever.

How do you put a value on a child’s safety and well being?

It is never OK for anyone to stand on the sidelines and do nothing when it comes to rape. It is time to end the silence. Learn more at JaneDoeNoMore.org
