Letter: Downtown Beacon Falls project lacks common sense

The streetscape project approved May 17 calls for the closure of the southbound lanes from the Depot Street Steel Bridge to the intersection of Route 42 east, which is Bethany Road. This results in one-lane traffic, both northbound and southbound traffic flow, on the remaining northbound lanes.

As a daily commuter, I experience the heavy volume of traffic that now exists. Reducing these lanes will only increase the problem. The traffic study done approximately 10 years ago has not taken into consideration two new industrial parks, Woodland High School, NEJ Clothing, a state garage, and all commuters.

The present plan suggests the street-shoulder portion of parking being eliminated in front of the Beacon Falls Market and Harvest Bar Grill. How does this help our current business? A new traffic study should be conducted that takes into consideration own new growth over the last decade.

First Selectman Sue Cable and all the boards should be more prudent with our funds.

They’re using money left over from CRRA, the sale of the grange, grant money, etc. These spending tactics are the main reason why our state and the entire country are now in severe debt.

Last, but certainly not least, is maintenance. Presently, as a resident I know the park behind the senior center was bulldozed for lack of maintenance. Our asphalt roads and curbing need fixing. The transfer station was closed for lack of funds. Please, let’s rethink this.

Obviously our track record has not been successful.
