To the editor,

On behalf of the Naugatuck Christmas Day Dinner Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers and financial contributors who helped make this dinner a success.

Over 20 years ago, John and Maureen Ford created the Christmas dinner so that their children could serve on Christmas Day and learn the true meaning of giving on Christmas. This was the Ford family’s gift that has continued for over 20 years. This dinner allows individuals, couples and families to join together in a community celebration and share the joy of holiday companionship.

This dinner was made possible by the generous financial support of the Naugatuck Lodge of Elks #967, the Naugatuck Police Department Union, Sabastian Barbosa of Sibby’s Automotive and The Sunshine Fund of WATR.

St. Michael’s Episcopal Church has allowed us the use of their hall and kitchen without charge for over 20 years. The Naugatuck Fire Department Union shares the toys that they collect to help Santa and the children that attend the dinner.

On Dec. 24, Christmas Eve, volunteers decorated the hall, peeled 200 pounds of fresh potatoes, 100 pounds of turnips and carrots, 400 pounds of turkey and 150 pounds of ham. Local people baked pies and cakes for dessert. A dedicated clean-up crew stayed until 5 p.m. on Christmas Day.

Over 200 guests were served in the hall and another 200 dinners were delivered to the home bound.

Thanks to all those who gave their time and Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Mike Kelly
