Dear Editor,

Salem Elementary School recently hosted a “Literacy Night” where first and second graders reminded us why Salem plays such an important roll in our children’s education. The Principal, Jennifer Kruge, opened the evening by telling us how proud her staff is of the students and how seriously they take their responsibility of educating them. With approximately forty parents and eight or so teachers in attendance the children proceeded to read and recite songs and passages from books that they have been reading. After the performance, parents were presented with strategies to foster reading and comprehension skills with our children. Mrs. Kruge’s pledge as Principal of Salem School is to creates “nurturing, positive and productive school community and to enable all within to reach their potential for learning academically and socially through encouragement, guidance and respect.” Her pledge includes a “dream that all children acquire the love of learning and are inspired to be lifelong learners”. As a former student a parent of two boys who attend Salem, I can say that Mrs. Kruge and her staff are making good on that pledge and the recent Literacy Night is one example of that.
