(Editor’s note: This letter is the October First Selectman’s letter that appears on the Beacon Falls town website.)

To the editor,

On Sept. 23, the Beacon Falls streetscape was celebrated with an official grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony. The streetscape project is part of a grand project started in the late 90s, with a formal plan drafted in 2002. I would like to acknowledge and recognize those who had the vision and prepared the master plan for “Tomorrow’s Downtown Plans and Concepts” in 2002: the 2002 Board of Selectman, including First Selectman Richard F. Mihalcik, Selectman Richard L. Rydzik and Selectman Susan A. Cable; Economic Development Commission Chairman Anthony San Angelo, Commissioners Roy Bachinsky, John W. Betkoski III, Edward S. Korzon, Michael A. Krenesky, Joseph W. Norton and James W. Woodward, Jr., and the Citizens for Tomorrow’s Downtown. Thank you all for your vision and persistence; as finances allow, we will work to finish this project.

Town Tax Collector Mildred Jurzynski has retired from her post, effective Sept. 30. Millie has faithfully served her community in many capacities over the years, most recently in the tax office. I wish her the best as she enjoys well-earned time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The Board of Selectman is contemplating a “Town of Beacon Falls” Facebook page. There are upfront and monthly costs associated with this project, which is being considered so that residents can better stay on top of happenings in Beacon Falls. The project is currently on hold until early 2013. In the meantime, do avail yourself of our excellent website.

Tuesday, Nov. 6 is Election Day; does that affect Friday’s trash pick-up, moving it to Saturday? No. Do you have trouble remembering which holidays cause that schedule to change? If so, simply check the Beacon Falls website, click on departments and then Public Works, and get your answer. Subscribe to the town website and receive the First Selectman’s letter in your inbox and be alerted via email any time pertinent news is posted, i.e., trash pick-up schedules, etc. I encourage all residents to log on to the town website, www.beaconfalls-ct.org and sign up to receive information for free. Click on “Subscribe to News” on the left side and follow the instructions.

The beauty of the changing leaves is a stark reminder of the impending snow-plowing season. As you rake up your yard, remember that the Public Works Department no longer vacuums residents’ leaves. All leaves are to be placed in biodegradable bags and placed curbside; call (203) 729-6978 to arrange pickup. Leave a message with the date, time and location of your leaves. Please avoid letting the bags get wet.

The final transfer station of the year will be held on Oct. 27. Please plan accordingly as the station will not reopen until spring 2013.

Enjoy the fall foliage this season.
