(Editor’s note: This letter is the September First Selectman’s letter that appears on the Beacon Falls town website.)

To the editor,

Please join me in welcoming our new fulltime Resident Trooper, TFC Andrew Borelli. Trooper Borelli was officially assigned to the Town of Beacon Falls on Aug. 10, 2012 by the Connecticut State Police. He had been serving the town on an interim basis since April and has become a valuable member of our community.

Please be aware that in the past few weeks, there has been in an increase in the theft of items from cars in neighborhoods throughout Beacon Falls. In a down economy, it is essential that we take extreme care with our homes and property, so remember to lock all doors, even when home. Please contact the Beacon Falls Police Department, (203) 729-3313, immediately if you see strange vehicles in your area or if you should ever become a victim. Remember, “If you see something, say something.”

As summer winds down and school is back in session, I remind all residents to be aware of the increased presence of school buses and students on the roads. Children, frequently clothed in dark colors, are out and about from dawn to dusk.

For the past year, Beacon Falls has been part of “single stream recycling.” I encourage every household to purchase a large trash receptacle, label it “Recycling” and place all numbered plastic (not just 1 and 2), paper and cardboard, broken down into manageable pieces, in this separate container. The town pays for all items placed in your trash container by the ton, but we are reimbursed for the recyclables. If every household separates trash and recycling, reducing the one and increasing the other, it will result in substantial savings. Currently, trash and recycling are picked up on Friday mornings. Please be considerate and place containers curbside no earlier than Thursday afternoon, removing them by Friday evening.

On Sept. 23, 2012, Beacon Falls will take part in Explore the Naugatuck. During this event, hosted and sponsored by John Monroe from the National Park Service, professional bicyclists will ride the proposed Naugatuck River Greenway from Torrington to Derby. The group of cyclists will stop in Beacon Falls at approximately 2 p.m. and a ceremony will be held at Volunteer Park. A special thank you to Liz Falzone for coordinating the event for Beacon Falls.
