(Editor’s note: This letter is the September First Selectman’s letter that appears on the Beacon Falls town website.)

To the editor,

Yes, sadly, summer is over. Beacon Falls teachers returned to school on Aug. 24, with students arriving on Sept. 3. I trust that everyone is energized and eager to plunge into the new school year.

We extend a warm welcome to Kurt Ogren, the new Woodland Regional High School principal. He comes to us with many years of experience, and we look forward to him enjoying a long tenure in Region 16.

Remember that students and school buses are back on the roads; please be extra cautious while traveling in the early mornings and late afternoons.

Jeremy Rodorigo, EMS director for Beacon Hose Company No. 1, held a day-long CPR training course on Aug. 24. This event was offered free of charge to all who wished to learn how to save a life. A crew of 18 EMS and firefighter personnel worked tirelessly throughout the day, training 110 individuals in basic CPR. Thank you to Beacon Hose Company for your selfless service to the community.

Another business has chosen to call Beacon Falls home. New Era Barbershop, 119 South Main St., is a traditional barbershop, providing haircuts and hot shaves for men and boys. Gentlemen, do stop in to see TJ or Jon for a haircut or shave, and give them a warm welcome.

After 40 years of service at the Department of Public Works, Road Foreman Edward Bea has retired. Eddie began working with the town in June, 1973. Thank you Eddie, for your many years of service.

With yet another change of seasons upon us, it’s time to think about getting all heating equipment in proper working order. Whatever your source of heat, please take the time to have all appliances inspected and serviced prior to operation. Those of us who use alternate heating sources are reminded to review the proper procedures for operating our stoves. Remember: prepare early and stay safe.

Sincerely,

Gerard F. Smith
