To the editor,

The Beacon Falls municipal and Region 16 education budgets have been approved by voters; both were accepted after reductions in the original versions. The resulting increase to the taxpayer is less than 1 mill. The municipal budget was reduced by removing two capital projects: a roof for the fire department and a replacement fire truck. The roof will be paid for with funds from this year’s municipal budget, while the new fire truck will be part of a bonding package to be presented in August.

On July 9, 7 p.m., the Board of Selectmen will hold an informational town meeting at Woodland High School to discuss upgrades to the waste water treatment plant. I encourage all residents to attend this important town meeting, whether you have town sewers or a private septic system. This close to $15 million renovation project will impact all tax-paying residents. Project engineers, Woodward and Curran, will present the details of the project with a question and answer session to follow.

Summer is in full swing. The annual River Fest and Duck Race and the Fireman’s Carnival and Parade have come and gone. The Fireman’s Carnival was a successful fundraiser, in spite of torrential rain and the loss of one full day of activities. The Parade proudly showcased the very best of Beacon Falls, and was a winner, as usual. On behalf of the organizers of both events, thank you to all who attended; your support is greatly appreciated.

Family Day will be held on July 6, with the first annual cardboard boat regatta on Carrington Pond at Matthies Park at 10 a.m., followed by a Canoe/Kayak event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day will conclude with a fireworks display at the Pent Road Recreation Complex. Gates at the complex will open at 6:30 p.m. Buses will run from the Beacon Falls firehouse and Woodland Regional High School. The evening will feature food, music, a moon bounce and fireworks at dusk. For information, call Town Hall at (203) 279-4340.

All Family Day events are sponsored and run by the Beacon Falls Parks and Recreation Commission.

Please enjoy your summer and stay safe as you travel.

Sincerely,

Gerard F. Smith

First Selectman
