Letter: Fed up with tax increases

To the editor,

I was happily amazed at the turnout for the Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 28, 2012.  Coming from an Armed Forces family (my parents and aunts and uncles all served during WWII) I not only thank them on Memorial Day, but every day for what they did for our country. What a tribute it was to see the streets lined for this holiday.

But what I was also wondering where were all those folks at the tax meeting at the high school [May21]?

I look around and this isn’t exactly Westport. These people, including myself, don’t have a lot of money. They can really afford a tax increase? Obviously so, since they don’t care about another tax hike.  There were only 50 people at the meeting, but a lot more than that at the parade. I’m glad the parade got such a good turnout, but we also need to stick together as a community.

I wish there was a way to get this statement out there to wake up some people. I did go to the meeting, and it was a disgrace to have the committee sit up there being pompous with very few of us in the audience. We have to show them that we are fed up. I have been in Naugatuck 10 years now and my taxes on my house have doubled. Absolutely ridiculous.  Thanks for listening.

  1. I agree that not enough people attend the meeting concerning tax increases, but after living here many years, I don’t think there is much we can do as taxpayers to stem the tide. No one likes to see their taxes increase, but it is inevitable. I do how ever believe that our current mayor has done what he can to keep these increases to a minimum. One of our biggest problems is that we are a small town funded mostly by residential taxes. It is very difficult to attract commercial accounts to the Borough, especially in our current economy, vbut we need to continue trying. After all, we all want town services, so we need to pay for them. Unfortunately, there is no one out there to fund our town for us, except us.
