Locals produce 3 top 6 finishes at Open
NEW HAVEN — It was a call made for the good of the team, the kind of decision a coaching staff can only make when it has veteran runners who are both unselfish and clutch.
Woodland coaches Jeff Lownds and Tim Shea scratched senior Brandon Fowler from the 300-meter dash at Saturday’s indoor track and field State Open at the New Haven Athletic Center, hoping to conserve his energy for the anchor leg of the four-by-400 meter relay. Fowler was seeded 13th in the 300, a long shot to crack the top six and qualify for the New England championships, but it was his last chance to run his best individual event.
Woodland boys’ track second in Class M
NEW HAVEN — He’s an oddity at the start line: Standing erect, while his fellow hurdlers crouch in their blocks, legs cocked like the gun about to signal the beginning of their race.
Despite—or, perhaps, because of—his unorthodox posture, Woodland’s Brandon Fowler posted the fourth-fastest time in the 55-meter hurdles at Friday’s Class M indoor track and field championships at the New Haven Athletic Center then finished third in the 300 and anchored the second-place four-by-400 meter relay team. The senior’s efforts helped the Naugatuck Valley League champion Hawks tally 37 points and finish second overall, behind only mighty host Hillhouse High.
Moriello breaks Class L 1,000m record
NEW HAVEN — Rosa Moriello earned her wings Thursday at the Class L indoor track and field championships at the New Haven Athletic Center. The Naugatuck senior broke a six-year-old meet record in the 1,000-meter run, winning in two minutes, 58.94 seconds, a feat that may inspire a little artwork on her feet.
“I made a deal with my dad that if I broke the school record, I would ‘earn my wings,’” Moriello said, grinning. “I want to get a tattoo of those [Apollo] wings on my ankles.”
“You can always change your mind,” replied an alarmed NHS coach Bill Hanley. “A tattoo is forever. Would you want your middle school haircut forever?”
Local track teams dominate NVL meet
NEW HAVEN — The Naugatuck and Woodland girls went 1-2, and the boys did the same, in reverse order, as the local track and field teams ruled the Naugatuck Valley League indoor championships Tuesday at Hillhouse High School.
The Garnet and Grey ladies racked up 132.5 points to secure their fourth consecutive league title, while the Hawks gents’ 114.5 earned them the first in school history.
