BEACON FALLS — For the second time in the last three years, the Woodland golf team finished runner-up at the NVL championship match.

The Hawks shot an impressive round of 366 at the Watertown Golf Club on June 1, but Holy Cross ran away with the NVL crown by shooting a blistering round of 350.

The Hawks and the Crusaders met twice in the regular season with Holy Cross coming away victorious in both matches, the first by 23 and by 27 strokes the second time around.

Woodland, which finished the regular season 7-8, started the year slow but got stronger as the season went on leading up to the last week’s second-place showing.

“I knew this was the kind of score that we were capable of,” said Woodland head coach Bill Carangelo, who is in his 13th year at the helm. “It just took us a while to get going this season for whatever reason.”

Junior Julian Perino led the way for the Hawks with an 81 — the third best individual score of the tournament and eight strokes better than his round last year — and earned All-NVL status for the third straight season.

Sophomore Josh Hassan earned All-Iron Division honors shooting an 85 after coming through with a 94 at last year’s championship. The Hawks also got solid rounds from senior Alec Feducia, who shot a 95, and junior Chris Guerrette, who finished with a round of 105, to round out the scoring. Senior T.J. Giarratona shot a 113.

“We will graduate three seniors, Alec Feducia, Thomas Giarratona and Josh Sierra,” Carangelo said. “We have Julian, an All-NVL player, and Josh, an All-Iron Division player, back next year to lead the way.

“Hopefully it won’t take as long to get it going the way it did this year. We also have a freshman who did a good job for us in Tom Conroy. We made steady progress as the season went along and we ended up being the last team to qualify for the states.”

Woodland competed in the Division III state tournament on Monday at the Timberlin Country Club in Kensington as the 20th team to make the field. The Hawks finished 20th in the field with a team score of 392.

Perino tied for 59th out of a field of 100 golfers with a 91 for 18 holes. Hassan finished 74th with a 95, Guerrette and Giarratona both shot a 103, and Feducia had to withdraw from the tournament.
