The Naugatuck boys and girls outdoor track teams were well represented last Saturday at the New England outdoor track championships in Norwell, Mass.

Junior Aren Seeger and senior Erin Schofield represented the Garnet and Grey.

Seeger set a personal best time of 38.26 in the 300 hurdles at the New England championships. He finished third and qualified for Nationals this weekend in North Carolina.

“It was a very close race. They all came over the last hurdle shoulder to shoulder and came across the finish line all together,” Naugatuck head coach Ralph Roper said.

Seeger finished as runner-up at the Class L championships in the 300 hurdles and was the runner-up in the State Open with a time of 38.36.

“Aren has had a tremendously successful postseason,” Roper said. “Two second-place finishes in the Class L and State Open and now a third place at the New England championships. We couldn’t be prouder of his efforts.”

Seeger will be part of the 800 medley team with Andrew Dempsey, Rami Ammar and Xavier Lewis that will race on Friday at Nationals. He will then race in the 300 hurdles on Sunday.

“A very exciting way to end the season for him,” Roper said.

Schofield finished off her career with a lot of success, as well. She was the NVL and Class L champion in the javelin and finished third at the State Open with a throw of 115 feet, 4 inches to qualify for New Englands.

Schofield finished 21st in the javelin at New Englands with a throw of 102 feet, 11 inches.

“She had to wait as another athlete was in her line of sight and that may have thrown her off her game,” Roper said. “I know she wasn’t all that happy with her distance of 102 feet, 11 inches, but in the end I told her she has had an outstanding career as NVL and Class L state champion.”
