BEACON FALLS — The Woodland golf team rang up its best round of the season on Monday, and it couldn’t come at a better time.

The Hawks bested Kaynor Tech, 166-201, at Oxford Greens.

“We haven’t had the kind of season I thought we would have, but all of a sudden we are starting to put it all together,” Woodland head coach Bill Carangelo said.

“We played on the back nine at Oxford Greens so maybe it was the different surroundings,” Carangelo added. “The weather was terrible it was cold and rainy. Not the ideal conditions, but we had the best match of the season.”

With the NVL championship less than a week away, the Hawks appear to be putting it all together.

Julian Perino shot a season-best 34 to lead the way on Monday. Josh Hassan shot a solid 40, followed by Chris Guerrette with a 45 and Alec Feducia shooting a 47.

At 7-8 on the season, Woodland has experienced an up-and-down year. Last Thursday, Woodland lost, 190-199, to St. Paul (13-4). The Falcons were not at their best, but the Hawks couldn’t take advantage.

Perino was the co-medalist with a round of 43. Guerrette and Hassan checked in with rounds of 51, and T.J. Giarratona shot a 54.

Woodland wrapped up the regular season this week. The NVL championship is set to tee off on June 1. The Woodland foursome of Perino, Hassan, Guerrette and Feducia will battle the rest of the NVL at the championship match.

“If we can shoot the way we did against Kaynor we can be competitive with anyone at the championship,” Carangelo said. “Holy Cross is the team to beat. I don’t think they have shot a round over 170 all season.

“We are going to have to come to play that’s for sure. Torrington is another strong contender and Wolcott will be tough to beat. We go into every match looking to win, but if we can shoot the way we just did we can break into the top three.”
