No quit in Hawks

BEACON FALLS — Trailing 27-7 at halftime, the Hawks showed no signs of quitting when they took the field for the third quarter last Friday against Wolcott.

Senior captain Isaac Negron capped a 14-play drive with a touchdown to cut the deficit to 27-14, but those would be the last points for the Hawks as Wolcott pulled away to take a 46-14 win.

Negron scored all the points for Woodland (0-6) on the ground and had one of his best games of the season. Negron picked up 182 yards on 35 carries and the pair of scores to go along with two catches and 23 yards through the air.

Negron has rushed for 115 or more yards in every game but two so far this year and just passed the 500 yard mark for the season.

“He played very well for us, and for him size doesn’t matter, he runs like he’s is 6 feet and 200 pounds. He goes hard on every play and is a leader of our team on and off the field,” head coach Chris Moffo said.

The Hawks had 212 total rushing yards against Wolcott (5-1), surpassing 200 yards on the ground for the third time this season. Sophomore Edit Krivca added 50 yards on ten carries for Woodland.

“(Offensive coordinator) Cody (Kingsley) and I talked and we agree that Edit has to be more involved in our running game. He goes hard and deserves the carries,” Moffo said.

Freshman Zach Kabusk has also been a nice addition to the ground game. He averages 10.7 yards per carry and has 311 yards so far this season.

The Eagles scored through the air four times and on the ground three times. Quarterback Mike Polzella threw for 205 yards on 13 of 18 attempts and four touchdowns. Steve Urbanski caught seven of those passes for 135 yards and all four touchdowns.

“We played pretty well against a very tough opponent that just came off of a huge win. Our defense is struggling in the tackling department because it is young and small, and good tackling comes from good practice and experience,” Moffo said.

One player that is not struggling to tackle is senior captain Scott Lawrence. He is leading the team in stops this year and the next closest defender is 18 tackles behind him.

“Scott really flies around for us and is a second-year starter. We expect him to make big plays for us and he does,” Moffo said.

Despite the 0-6 start to the year, Moffo knows his team doesn’t lack effort.

“Our kids come hard every day. They come to work and put in their all. The experience for the younger guys over the next four weeks will be priceless. Our guys never quit,” Moffo said.

Woodland is on a bye this week and will host St. Paul Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m.

“(St. Paul head) coach (Jude) Kelly is a great coach and will have his guys ready to come to the Woods for sure. They are big and run the ball as much as we like to,” Moffo said.
