First goal in college

Former Woodland soccer player Alexa Casimiro scored her first collegiate goal last week to help No. 23 UConn (8-2) to a 4-1 win over Fordham.

Running wild

Woodland’s Isaac Negron has been one of the bright spots for the Hawks (0-3) this season rushing for 430 yards through three games. Last Friday, the senior running back ran for 142 yards and a touchdown in a 67-28 loss to Sacred Heart-Kaynor Tech.

Pocket presence

Naugatuck junior quarterback Mike Plasky carried the ‘Hounds last Friday to a 52-0 win over Torrington. He rushed for two touchdowns and threw four touchdown passes.

Offensive spark

Naugatuck junior hitter Cailee Bergin was on target in last Friday’s 3-0 win over Watertown. She scored 19 service points and seven aces.

Double winner

Naugatuck’s Addison Best has been a double-winner in all three meets so far this season. The senior led the Greyhounds in last Friday’s meet versus Oxford, winning the 200 freestyle in 2:12.78 and the 500 freestyle in 6:00.53.

Boys Soccer

The Greyhounds battled Pomperaug to a 1-1 tie Sept. 24. Pedro Mendes scored the only Naugatuck goal. Aren Seeger kept Pomperaug at bay making five saves in the net. Naugatuck rebounded on Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Sacred Heart to improve to 4-0-2 on the season. Seeger recorded the shutout and Thomas Martins led the offense with two goals. The Greyhounds will host Ansonia on Friday.

Girls Soccer

The Greyhounds saw its losing streak reach four in a row in a 6-1 loss to Pomperaug on Sept. 24. Kyla Magalhaes scored the only Naugatuck goal and Cassidy Baranowski made nine saves in net. On Tuesday, Naugy got back in the win column with a 7-0 win over Sacred Heart. Alissa McNeil and Hailey Boulanger scored two goals each. Naugy (3-4) will be at Ansonia on Friday.

Girls Swimming

Naugatuck dropped its first meet of the season Sept. 23 in a 95-85 loss to Oxford. Addison Best was a double-winner, taking first in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Maya Duplessis won the 200 IM, Olivia Filanowski won the 50 freestyle and Molly Kennelly won the 100 backstroke. Diver Katie Brown took first with a score of 155.70, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Duplessis, Stephanie Almeida, Sophia Garcia and Meghan Korowotny swam to first in 4:19.40. The results of the meet versus Kennedy on Tuesday were not reported. Naugatuck is back in action on Friday at Woodland.

Boys Soccer

The Hawks are quickly becoming one of the top teams in the league. On Tuesday, the Hawks (4-1-1) battled Watertown (4-1-1) to a scoreless tie. Xavier Gibson and Zach Powanda led the defensive charge with A.J. Oliveira making five saves in the net. Last Friday, Woodland defeated St. Paul, 5-3. Andrew Spofford had five saves in the net and Anthony Barreira led the offense with two goals. Dante Polletta, Senol Music and Jack LaPerriere added goals for the Hawks. Woodland is back at it on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Municipal Stadium to take on Wilby.

Girls Soccer  

The Hawks saw its undefeated streak in the NVL come to an end to the last team that beat them in the 2014 NVL finals. After 24 straight games without a loss in the NVL, Watertown pinned a 1-0 loss on the Hawks on Tuesday. Last Friday, Woodland (5-1) pulled out a 2-1 win over St. Paul. Julia Casimiro and Juliana Villano scored for the Hawks and Jenna Pannone made five saves in the net. Woodland will host Law of Milford on Friday.

Girls Swimming

Woodland lost its first meet of the season against undefeated Seymour Sept. 23, 95-85. Dia Gawronski set another school record in the 200 IM in a time of 2:16.32. Tatianna Lynn was a double-winner taking first in the 200 freestyle and first in the 500 freestyle. Diver Maddie Hoxie took first with a score of 160.25, and the 400 freestyle relay squad of Lynn, Brooke Pope, Kyla Drewry and Gawronski swam to first in 4:05.59. The Hawks fell to Sacred Heart, 97-88, on Tuesday to drop to 3-2 on the season. Gawronski picked up wins in the 200 free in 2:00.8 and the 100 free in 55.67. Lynn also picked up a pair of wins in the 200 IM and 500 free in 2:40 and 6:01.61, respectively. Woodland will host Naugatuck at 4 p.m. on Friday.
