NAUGATUCK — Play got under way last week in the Hop Brook Men’s Championship golf tournament. Judging by some of the first round results, things are heating up along with the weather.

“We did have a few exciting finishes,” Hop Brook golf pro Bob Clark said. “Chris Sokolowski pulled off a major upset defeating the No. 4 seed David LeRoy, and Craig Behun defeated Jerry Russo on the 18th hole.”

Clark added, “We even had a little bit of a family rivalry going on when Steve Slekis beat his son-in-law Mike Morley.”

Two first round matches in the Championship Flight haven’t been played yet due to scheduling conflicts: the much-anticipated match between tournament-favorite Mike Erickson and Nate Deller, along with the matchup between Pat Corbett and Glen Petelle.
