NEW HAVEN — The Woodland and Naugatuck girls tennis teams accomplished a lot this season and concluded that success last week in the State Open at Yale University.
Both teams were represented at the State Open, playing among the best players in the state.
Naugatuck’s No. 1 singles player senior Sarah Cook came in ranked 16th and won an opening round match, 8-1, against Julianna Pinto of Platt Tech. Cook moved on to the first round versus Newtown’s Lauren Beier, and came up on the short end of an 8-2 final.
The Hawks had two singles players in action.
No. 1 singles player junior Ally Mayne secured an 8-0 victory in the first round against Sarah Rothman of Old Saybrook. Mayne saw her run in the State Open come to an end in the second round. She dropped an 8-0 decision to Shelby Vertula of Lauralton Hall.
Woodland’s No. 2 singles player sophomore Amanda Doughney was upended in an opening round match, 8-1, against Stonington’s Charlotte Johnstone.
Woodland also had two doubles teams in the state open.
The No. 1 doubles team of seniors Paige Gainey and Katie Rioux lost a first round match by default to Kendall Cathcart and Chloe Tracy of Wethersfield.
Woodland’s No. 2 doubles team of juniors Alyssa Varesio and Angelina Padilla dropped an opening round match, 8-1, to Jamie Hashem and Jessica Foster of Amity.
