NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck girls tennis team started the season in April having to replace five starters who graduated last year. Now, the Greyhounds are one win away from a Naugatuck Valley League championship.

No. 5 Naugatuck will face No. 3 Watertown Friday at 3 p.m. at Woodland Regional High School in Beacon Falls in the final of the NVL girls tennis tournament.

The Greyhounds advanced to the final match by taking down No. 1 Sacred Heart, 4-3, Wednesday in the semifinals at Fulton Park in Waterbury.

Sarah Cook and Kelly Carr won their singles matches, 8-0 and 8-2 respectively, for the Greyhounds. The doubles teams of Kelly Murphy and Ally Mezzo (8-6) and Gina Greco and Nicole Bolduc (8-5) gave Naugatuck the win.

The win was the second for Naugatuck over the Hearts this season. The Greyhounds snapped Sacred Heart’s 11-match winning streak earlier this month.

Naugatuck opened the tournament with a 4-3 win over No. 4 Woodland on Monday.

The Greyhounds faced Watertown twice in the regular season, losing both matches. The Indians advanced to the final with wins over No. 6 St. Paul (4-3) in the first round and No. 2 Wolcott (5-2) in the semifinals.
