NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck golf team has been on par with the competition of late, but just a few strokes off of adding to the win column.

On Monday, Naugatuck hosted Torrington at Hop Brook golf course and came up on the short end of a 195-197 shootout.

Playing on their home course, the Greyhounds showed great improvement Monday after losing a 186-229 decision to Torrington earlier in the season. Jake Alcorace was the medalist with a round of 39. Nick Fox shot a solid 48. Colin Sheedy came in with a 55 and Butler wound up at 57.

“It was a match we should have won,” Naugatuck head coach Bob Clark said. “But I can’t fault the players for their effort. With any breaks this season we are a fourth-place team.”

On Tuesday, the Greyhounds found themselves in another close battle on the road against St. Paul. The Falcons ultimately pulled out the win over Naugy, 152-159.

Alcorace led Naugatuck with a co-medalist round of 35. Eli Rachiele (41) Sheedy (42) and Butler (41) all had rounds in the 40s for the Greyhounds.

The Greyhounds dropped to 5-10 on the season after the loss, but they have shown signs of picking it up a notch as the regular season winds down.

On May 18, at Crestbrook Naugatuck took on the NVL frontrunner Watertown in a 187-229 defeat. Alcorace set the mark shooting a 47 for Naugy. Rithvik Rajkumar hit a 59, Ethan Maxwell shot at 60 and Butler shot a 63.

Naugatuck will be back at home Tuesday at Hop Brook to host Woodland as a final tune up to the NVL championship meet in Watertown on June 2.
