Hawks improve to 2-0 on the links

BEACON FALLS — The Woodland golf team ran its record to 2-0 on the season with a convincing 183-261 win over Kennedy last Thursday at Western Hills in Waterbury.

It was the first time this season that the Hawks were playing away and that may have led to a little higher score than their season-opening 176-286 win over Crosby played at Oxford Greens.

Zach Crowell shot a medalist round of 41 — four strokes better than the week before in the win over the Bulldogs — versus Kennedy. Ryan Warner, the medalist versus Crosby with a sterling round of 39, shot a 49 against the Eagles.

The Hawks may have been in unfamiliar territory playing on the road but Joshua Perino was consistent shooting a 42 after putting up a 44 to open the season. The final player in the foursome was Alec Feducia, who shot a 55, a little higher than the 50 he posted against Crosby.

“Western Hills is a challenging course,” Woodland head coach Bill Carangelo said. “It’s a lot tougher than East Mountain. Ryan struggled and was ten strokes off his game. Zach had a real good round and he is really shooting well right now. Josh is very consistent in the low 40s. Now we need to close the gap between four through six.”

Prior to the start of the season Carangelo had concerns about the No. 4 spot in the foursome. A ten-stroke difference was to be expected but in order to compete with the best teams in the league the Hawks are going to need to shave a few strokes off their short game.

“We had Chris Guerrette out there working with Zach and Ryan He’s coming along and we are hoping to get another player in the 40s to be competitive with the top teams in the league,” Carangelo said.

The key to keeping Woodland in the hunt rests on the shoulders of their top three: Warner, Crowell and Perino. Any one of those golfers can come in with a medalist round in any given match.

The Hawks have a break in their schedule allowing them some time to fix the little things and focus on their strengths. If practice makes perfect then Woodland is heading in the right direction with 12 days in between matches.

“We did have two matches scheduled for this week against Wolcott and Torrington but there was a scheduling conflict,” Carangelo said this week. “But we put our time to good use playing 18 holes Monday and Tuesday and we will go at it again on Wednesday.”

The next time Hawks step onto the links will be next Tuesday at Hop Brook to take on neighboring rival Naugatuck.
