BEACON FALLS — It’s been a tale of two seasons early on for the Woodland softball team.

The Hawks were outscored by a combined 13-2 in their two losses. They left little doubt in their first three wins, outscoring the opposition by a head-shaking 66-9 margin.

On Monday, the Hawks were in a real battle with Sacred Heart and fought back from a 4-0 deficit to pull out an 8-5 victory — their third in a row — to improve to 4-2.

Jen Triana went the distance in the pitchers circle striking out seven and slammed a two-run double to help herself out at the plate.

“Sacred Heart has a couple of big hitters but once Jen figured out the spot she needed to pitch to she was effective,” Woodland head coach Loren Luddy said.

Cam Caswell paced the Hawks with four hits, including a triple and a home run, with two RBI and three runs scored. Maddie Hupprich contributed a double, a triple and a run scored.

“As soon as we started hitting some line drives and got away from the long fly balls we were able to put some runs on the board,” Luddy said. “The girls have been working real hard at the plate learning what the umpire’s strike zone is.”

Woodland’s offense started to connect last week when the Hawks throttled Wilby, 21-2, April 13. Triana went the distance for the win striking out seven. Carla Piccolo led the way at the plate with four hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

Steph Krebbs had two hits and three runs. Gina Farina added two hits, drove in three runs and scored twice for the Hawks.

“Steph is a real asset to us and her flexibility, position wise, gets her in the lineup most games,” Luddy said. “She can play short, second and the outfield and as a freshman she is really showing herself to be a good athlete.”

Defensively Woodland is making the plays they have to with Sam White in the outfield, Sam Buzgo at first base and Emily Brouillette and Meredith Dyckman sharing time behind the plate.

Last Friday, Woodland continued to swing away knocking off Derby, 20-0. Ivy Geloso pitched a two-hitter, scored five runs, drove in a run and belted a home run.

Brouillette had two singles, a double and a triple good for two RBI and a run scored. Farina added three hits and scored a run with Gabby Bedryczuk contributing a two-run double.

“We’ve had to move players around with some girls going away on college trips,” Luddy said. “Sam White and Carla Piccolo can cover a lot of ground in the outfield.

“Our pitching rotation is coming along. Ivy and Jen are settling in. Maddie Hupprich is more comfortable at second base for us and made a couple of real good plays against Sacred Heart.”

Woodland will play St. Paul on Wednesday. The Hawks will visit Ansonia on Friday before heading to Naugatuck on Saturday for an 11 a.m. game.
