BEACON FALLS — Naugatuck Valley League dance teams took center stage at the league championship Feb. 24 at Woodland Regional High School.

The Woodland dance team finished as NVL runner-up. Naugatuck took eighth.

Wolcott defended its title with a total team score of 534.7 in the eight-team field. Woodland put up a score of 502.2, while Naugatuck posted a 354.4         . The other NVL schools competing were Holy Cross, Oxford, Seymour, Torrington and Watertown.

“There were some areas of our routine that we could have done better,” Woodland head coach Marissa Decola said. “But to finish second to the defending champion Wolcott, our toughest competitor, I’m thrilled with the overall outcome.”

Naugatuck head coach Donna Gomes couldn’t be reached for comment.

Woodland captains Casey Rioux, Kelsey Linnell and Mary Vlamis as well as Naugatuck’s Emily Cronin earned All NVL honors.

Woodland captured first place in kick and third place in jazz at the Quinnipiac Dance Challenge Jan. 30 and made some noise in the state competition Saturday at Hamden High School.

“The Quinnipiac Challenge was a huge competition for us,” Decola said. “The scores we had were a milestone for us. We are putting up higher scores each year since I’ve been coach. It says a lot about the hard work these girls are putting into it.”

Woodland finished second in kick and fourth in jazz at the state competition, according to Decola.

The full results from the state championship were not available as of this post. An email to Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference spokesman Joel Cookson seeking the results was not returned as of this post.
