Tigersharks finish eighth at state meet

NAUGATUCK — The City Hill Middle School swim team took home eighth place out of 15 teams at the state championship meet Jan. 30 at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.

The Tigersharks, who finished the regular season 3-2, had 16 swimmers on the roster this year: Spencer Maher (captain) Alex Manasoiu (captain), Nicole DaSilva (captain), Sydney Bui, Bailey Ceryak, Molly Kennelly, Avianna Sajous and Emily Sarmiento, Billy Brown, Sophia Bui, Kayla Couch, Ashley Fegley, Katelyn Fortney, Jacob Hall, Michael Hill, Emma Rodrigues and Ryan Vincent.

The team had numerous top ten finishes at the state championship.

The girls medley relay of Kennelly, DaSilva, Fortney and Sarmiento finished fourth (2:15.23).

The girls 200 freestyle relay team of Sarmiento, DaSilva, Kennelly and Fortney finished second (1:59.52), while the boys squad of Vincent, Hill, Maher and Manasoiu finished fifth (1:53.44).

The boys 400 freestyle relay team of Ceryak, Vincent, Maher and Manasoiu finished fourth (4:24.03)

Manasoiu finished third in the 50 freestyle (25.55) and fourth in the 100 freestyle (56.59).

Kennelly finished third (30.05) in the 50 freestyle and the 50 backstroke (32.89).

Maher finished third (1:05.43) in the 100 individual medley and second (27.60) in the 50 butterfly.

DaSilva finished third (38.40) in the 50 breaststroke, Fortney finished ninth in the 50 butterfly (33.18), and Brown took home third in diving (1:04.45).

Tournament to aid Prospect family

PROSPECT — The 3rd Annual Karen Depalma 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament is set for March.

The tournament is dedicated to the late Karen DePalma, who died in 2012 after an 11-year fight with breast cancer. DePalma’s husband, Joe, is currently battling breast cancer. The tournament is organized by Prospect Parks and Recreation to raise money to help Joe DePalma and his two children.

The tournament is March 19 at Woodland Regional High School in Beacon Falls. It’s open to boys and girls in grades six through 12. Games will be played from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for grades six through eight and from 1 to 4 p.m. for the high school-aged players. The cost is $10 per player and teams can have up to five players. Teams and individuals are welcome to sign up.
