LITCHFIELD — Naugatuck High School graduate Dan Schumacher won the 26th annual Milton Resolution Run Jan. 1.

The 162 runners — a record field of runners — enjoyed ideal conditions on the first day of the new year.

Schumacher, a freshman at Columbia University, won the 5-mile in a time of 26:54.

Schumacher, a former All-State runner at Naugatuck High School, started fast and never looked back in winning with ease. His time was 16 seconds off the course record of 26:38, set by Brian Shafer of Litchfield in 1996.

“I just wanted to get in a good workout and start the new year off the right way,” said Schumacher, who is home on Christmas break and was running in Milton for the first time. “The hills were hard, especially the one at three miles, but I really liked the course.”

Schumacher is keeping shape for the indoor track and field season at Columbia.

Sami Glass, a sophomore at Yale University and Goshen resident, was the first female finisher with her fifth-place time of 32:12.
