A need for speed

Ariana Alvarado, the Naugatuck girls indoor track speedster, qualified for the states with two sensational runs at the Hillhouse Invitational. The senior ran a 7.61 in the 55 meter dash and a 45.10 in the 300 meter run.

Going the distance

Woodland girls indoor track long distance runner Clara Drozdowski placed fourth in the 1,000 meters at the Shoreline Coaches Invitational finishing with a time of 3:20.95.

A hop, skip and a jump

Woodland boys indoor track jumper Tom Smith leaped his way to second place in the high jump at the Shoreline Coaches invitational with an effort of 5 feet, 8 inches.

A season high

Woodland senior girls basketball captain Carla Piccolo threw down a season-high 21 points on Tuesday as the Hawks defeated Wilby for their fifth straight win.

A need to score

The Woodland boys basketball team needs to find some points to put on the board. Senior forward Jon Scirpo stepped up scoring a season-high 12 points in a loss to Wilby on Tuesday.

Word from the Woods

Girls Basketball

Woodland is on a roll. The Hawks made it look easy on Tuesday recording a dominating 71-20 win over Wilby for their fifth straight victory. Carla Piccolo led the way with 21 points. Morina Bojka had 17 points and Maddie Hupprich added nine points for the Hawks (5-1). Woodland will host Kaynor Tech on Wednesday and Derby on Friday, before matchups with Sacred Heart Jan. 11 and St. Paul Jan. 13.

Boys Swimming

Naugatuck (1-1) is back in the pool on Friday at Crosby after more than a week off. The Greyhounds will host Seymour next Tuesday.

Girls Basketball

Naugatuck played in the championship game of the Sacred Heart Holiday Tournament last Saturday and was upended by Barlow in a 41-26 loss. Nicole Boucher led the way scoring 11 points and was named to the All-Tournament team. On Tuesday, the Greyhounds fell to Crosby, 50-33. Boucher led the Naugy scorers with 10 points and Andrea Mercer added seven points. Jackie Aronin and Ally Mezzo added six points each. The Greyhounds (2-5) will host Oxford on Friday before taking on Holy Cross Jan. 11 and Seymour Jan. 13.
