Woodland’s Morina Bojka shot the lights out Dec. 23 versus Kennedy. The junior scored 35 points as the Hawks battled back from a 12-point third period deficit to defeat Kennedy, 64-56.
Leading the way
Woodland senior basketball captain Carla Piccolo has scored in double figures in the first five games to lead the Hawks in scoring at 14 points per game. Her season-high 19 points helped Woodland to comeback and defeat Kennedy.
Running with the best of them
Naugatuck senior captain Mark Zamani led the indoor track team at the Hillhouse Invitational against some of the best teams in the state. Zamani took second place in the 1,000 meters against 99 other runners in the field. He also finished fourth in the 3,200 with 60 runners in the field.
Naugatuck senior basketball captain Nicole Boucher has led the Greyhounds in scoring in four of five games this season and is averaging 12.8 points per game. Her 20-point effort in a 40-19 win over Sacred Heart Dec. 26 was a season high and helped Naugy to back-to-back wins.
Naugatuck senior basketball captain Fejiro Onakpoma has emerged as one of the league leaders in scoring in the NVL. The Greyhounds’ big man knocked down 26 points on Tuesday in a 56-41 comeback win over Wolcott to give him the third best scoring average in the league at 27 points per game.
The Greyhounds came roaring back from a 28-19 halftime deficit on Tuesday to beat Wolcott, 56-41. Naugatuck (1-1) outscored the Eagles 26-5 in the final period to pull away. Fejiro Onakpoma led the way with 26 points, but a strong supporting cast helped Naugatuck to its first win of the season. Caleb Scott chipped in with nine points and Andre Trosan added eight points. James Mesidor and Alijah Garris added five points each. Naugatuck will look to continue its winning ways next Tuesday at Crosby before taking on Oxford on Jan. 8.
Word from the Woods
The Hawks are is still looking for their first win of the season. Woodland fell to Kennedy, 70-34, Dec. 23. Eric Beutel led the way for Woodland (0-2) with nine points. Zach Bedryczuk added eight points and Rich Rousseau added six points. Woodland is set to host Wilby next Tuesday before hitting the road to face HMTCA Jan. 7 and Derby Jan. 8.
