State tournament action continues today, and three teams from Naugatuck and Woodland are still standing.

Volleyball

Woodland, the top seed in Class M, is on to the quarterfinals. The Hawks (20-2) earned a bye in the first round and topped Tolland, 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-20), on Wednesday.

McKenna Cronin led the Hawks with 13 kills, six digs and four aces. Sam White had 15 digs, nine kills and four aces and Cameron Caswell 15 digs and three aces.

Woodland will host No. 25 Rockville in the quarterfinals Friday at 5 p.m.

Naugatuck made quick work of Lauralton Hall Monday night in the opening round of the Class L volleyball tournament.

The No. 13 Greyhounds swept the No. 20 Crusaders, 3-0, off the court. The match scores were 25-9, 25-18 and 25-21.

Ally Mezzo led the way for Naugy (15-6) against Lauralton Hall (10-11) with 14 points, two aces and six kills. Nicole Healy added 10 points and two aces of her own.

Alexa Blazas and Kelly Murphy dished out 17 and 11 assists, respectively, for Naugatuck.

On the defensive side, Jenna Massicotte tallied eight digs. Taylor Hyde and Olivia Rotatori protected the net with five and four blocks, respectively.

Naugatuck will head on the road in the second round to face No. 4 Joel Barlow (16-2) Thursday at 6 p.m.

Girls Soccer

Woodland, the number one seed in Class M, survived a second-round scare from No. 16 Rocky Hill Wednesday afternoon in Beacon Falls.

The Hawks beat Rocky Hill, 2-1, and needed two rounds of penalty kicks before prevailing, 8-7, to advance to the quarterfinals.

Goalkeeper Jenna Pannone made two saves on penalty kicks and had seven saves in the game for Woodland (19-0-1). With Woodland down 1-0 in the second half, Alexa Casimiro scored off a header from her sister, Julia Casimiro to tie the game.

Woodland received penalty kicks from Alexa and Julia Casimiro, Jess Rodrigues, Gillian Hotchkiss, Sam Plasky, Erin Machado, Eliza Smith and Hailey Boris.

Woodland hosts No. 9 Stonington (14-4) in the quarterfinals Friday at 2 p.m.

The Naugatuck girls soccer season came to an end on Monday after the No. 21 Greyhounds (10-10) dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 7 Joel Barlow (9-3-4) in the first round of Class L tournament.

“It’s so sad the way this season ended up,” Naugatuck head coach Lisa Mariano said. “But we did make states and the semifinals of the NVL, so there were some good points. And the development of the younger players has me optimistic about next season.”

Boys soccer

The season came to an end Tuesday for Naugatuck and Woodland.

Naugatuck entered the Class L tournament as the 10th seed. The ‘Hounds fell, 2-0, to No. 23 Lyman Hall (7-7-3) at home.

Lyman Hall scored goals in the 65th and 74th minute to knock out the Greyhounds (14-3-3)

After a scoreless first half, Naugatuck got its attack in gear and pressured Lyman Hall keeper Brendan O’Connell (11 saves). Hall survived the early thrust and responded by putting the ball home twice past Ahmed (five saves).

Woodland was the 20th seed in the Class M tournament and visited No. 13 Ansonia, where the Hawks fell, 1-0.

Oliveira made seven saves in goal to keep the Hawks (11-8-1) within striking distance against the Chargers (10-4-3).
