Records are meant to be broken
Woodland senior co-captain Sean McAllen broke his own school record rushing for 283 yards on 22 carries and scored all four of the Hawks touchdowns in the season opening 27-7 win over Oxford last Friday.
Music to Woodland’s ears
Sophomore Woodland midfielder Senol Music scored two goals, including the game winner, in overtime for the Woodland boys soccer team in Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over Holy Cross.
Serves up
Kathryn Healy led the Naugatuck volleyball team to victory on Tuesday in a 3-0 shutout of Watertown as the senior outside hitter scored 26 service points and was on target in serve dishing up eight aces.
Setting the pace
Clara Drozdowski posted the best time in the NVL out of all the girls cross country meets ran on Tuesday. The senior co-captain ran to a first place finish in 21:35 leading Woodland to victory over Wilby, St. Paul and Abbott Tech.
Making a splash
Cara Rotatori captured two first-place finishes in the Greyhounds season opening 87-77 win over Kennedy on Tuesday. The senior co-captain took first place in the 100 freestyle in 1:02.27 and first place in the 200 freestyle in 2:16.25 to set the Hounds course to victory.
Naugy Notes
Cross Country
The defending NVL champion boys team (2-0) left nothing to chance in the season-opener taking the top four spots earning a 16-46 win over Holy Cross and a 15-46 win over Crosby at Hop Brook on Tuesday. Graden Beasley raced to victory in 17:24 with Mark Zamani finishing second, Brandon Thomas taking third and Dave Kerns placing fourth. Luis Garces finished seventh and Elliot Via was ninth. The girls got off on the right track with Courtney Morin racing to first place in 23:47 and Lauren Stankiewicz taking second, but Holy Cross dominated the middle of the pack taking the next five spots and came away with a 25-34 win over Naugatuck. The Hounds (1-1) did get by Crosby (21-35) margin with Briana Lennon placing eighth. The Greyhounds get back on the course Tuesday when they will host Oxford, Sacred Heart and Wilby at Hop Brook.
Girls Swimming
The Naugy girls (1-0) opened the season with a victory on Tuesday getting past Kennedy by an 87-77 margin. Cara Rotatori led the way with victories in the 100 and 200 freestyle races. Faith Tuscano won the 200 IM with Alexandra Silva raced to victory in the 50 freestyle. Meghan Lauer took first place in the 500 freestyle and Naugatuck showed the kind of depth that could keep them in the hunt for an NVL title with Katie Brown winning the diving competition. The Greyhounds are back in the pool on Friday when they head to Watertown for a 4 p.m. matchup.
Word from the Woods
Cross Country
The boys (3-0) got off on the right foot racing to three wins on Tuesday defeating Wilby (20-43), St. Paul (15-45) and Abbott Tech (15-45). Senior co-captain Brian Sardinskas led the way with a second place finish in 18:13. Then the Hawks opened the flood gates taking the next six spots. Matt Giaquinto finished third, Kyle Crowell fourth, Matt Luxeder fifth, Paul Jones sixth, Collin Kennelly seventh and Pat Vogel eighth. The girls (3-0) opened defense of back-to-back NVL titles with a convincing showing on Tuesday earning three wins against Wilby (17-46), St. Paul (17-45) and Abbott Tech (15-45). Clara Drozdowski led the way to victory with a first-place finish in 21:35. Kelsey Mitchell was second in 22:24 and Marina Bojka was third in 23:23. Kailyn Accetura was sixth, Bianca Poehailos was seventh and Meredith Dyckman was ninth. The Hawks will be back in action Tuesday versus Crosby, Torrington and Wolcott in Torrington,
Girls Swimming
The Hawks (1-1) opened the season with a solid 94-77 win over Holy Cross last Friday. Tatianna Lynn led the way with two first-place finishes in the 200 and 500 freestyle. Sarah Bryden (50 freestyle) and Brooke Pope (100 freestyle) also swam to first place and Lauren Lombardo won the diving competition. On Tuesday, Woodland ran into two-time defending NVL champion Sacred Heart and came up on the short end of a 95-85 final margin. Lombardo won her second diving competition of the season and Carly Erickson swam to victory in the 100 breaststroke. The Hawks return to the pool Tuesday when they will host Oxford at 4 p.m.
