BEACON FALLS — A baseball season can have its ups and downs. Woodland is finding that out first hand.
After a hot start, Woodland has cooled off. The Hawks dropped an 11-3 decision to Wolcott on Monday, to fall to 7-6 overall.
“It’s baseball,” Woodland head coach Mike Kingsley. “It’s a humbling game and sometimes it doesn’t bounce your way. Long way to go in this season.”
Dylan Cummings had a double and an RBI for the Hawks, who lost their third straight.
On April 29, Woodland dropped a 6-1 game to Holy Cross, which had two homers.
Tyler Boisvert pitched well and produced offense for the Hawks. Boisvert allowed six hits and struck out nine. At the plate, he had two doubles and a single. Kevin Gabianelli also had a sac fly in the loss.
“We began the week versus Holy Cross and played well with no errors, but fell victim to the long ball,” Kingsley said.
On April 30, Woodland held a 5-3 lead in the fifth against Watertown, the top team in the league. Again, the home run ball proved to be decisive in 9-5 loss. Watertown’s Nick Mondak had two three-run homers.
“We break down the season each week to win the weeks and [last week] was the first week we didn’t accomplish our goals,” Kingsley added.
Matt Spofford and Joe Poeta were the hitting stars for Woodland against Watertown. Spoffard had a double, a single and three RBI, while Poeta added three hits and an RBI.
Kingsley is confident that Woodland can make a run down the stretch of the season.
“We are only a little past the mid-point of the season and we are playing good baseball without the benefit of some timely hitting,” Kingsley said. “This team believes it will be a team to be reckoned with when the dust settles.”
Kingsley also pointed to some key contributors in the Hawks’ lineup.
“Mike Kenney and Tyler Boisvert have been consistent at the plate as well as Matthew Spofford on the mound,” Kingsley said. “I am confident that the hard work that this team puts in day in and day out will pay off for them.”
Woodland got back on track Wednesday with an 11-0 win over Seymour to improve to 8-6. Spofford allowed five hits and struck out seven on the mound. Sam Merriman had two hits, including a grand slam. Boisvert added three hits and Kenney chipped in with two hits and an RBI.
Woodland will host Crosby on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and travel to Torrington on May 11 before hosting Naugy on May 13.
