MIDDLETOWN — The Woodland boys swim team capped the season March 18 with a 13th-place finish at the Class S championships at Wesleyan University.
The Hawks tallied 168 points to finish in the upper half of the 29-team field. Weston won the championship with 683 points.
“The team swam great,” Woodland head coach Tom Currier said. “Everyone who swam had personal bests or within tenths of a second of their best times.”
Senior Aidan Music made the most waves for the Woodland, earning top-10 finishes in two individual events.
“Aidan is a hardworking talented young athlete,” Currier said.
Music came in fifth (1:04.98) in the 100 breaststroke and seventh (2:05.88) in the 200 individual medley. Music was also part of two relay squads that finished in the top 10.
Music, Donovan White, Aidan Music and J.D. Dyckman finished eighth (1:51.90) in the 200 medley relay. Music, Dyckman, Zachary Bellavance and Colin Kennelly also finished eighth (1:40.59) in the 200 freestyle relay.
“The members of the relays have worked hard all year,” Currier said. “They listen and give their all during practice, which translates to good times at states.”
Dyckman, White and Jordan Baer also scored points in individual events. Dyckman finished 18th (24.67) in the 50 freestyle. White took 14th (1:07.84) in the 100 breaststroke and Baer finished 21st (1:03.69) in the 100 butterfly.
The 400 freestyle relay team (Bellavance, Kennelly, Jake Stow and Julie Hinckley) swam to 18th in 3:56.77 to round out the scoring for the Hawks.
“The year was fun and exciting,” said Currier about the season.
The Hawks will lose Music, Dyckman and fellow senior Pat Conway, all captains this season, to graduation. Currier said the three seniors have been leaders and role models for everyone on the team. The future is bright though, as Currier will look to juniors White, Baer and Jimmy Jensen to step forward next season and lead the team.
