Naugy, Woodland compete at cheerleading championship

WATERBURY — The NVL cheerleading championship was held at Crosby High School Saturday with 10 all girls teams competing for the title and four entrants competing in the co-ed division.

The Woodland Hawks under head coach Leigh Graveline finished sixth with 67.70 points in the all girls competition. Watertown defended its crown scoring a team total of 85.75 points to win the championship for the second year in a row.

“The NVL is one of the most talented in the states with many teams going on to finish in the top three in their respective divisions,” Graveline said. “We are very happy with how we performed and look forward to competing in the states.”

Woodland is led by senior captains Rosemary Donnelly, Marinela Gernerowicz and Erika Lugo along with seniors Kayla Caniano, Emily Marticello and Abby Nelson. Sophomore Kayla Macharelli was named to the All-NVL team.

Naugatuck, under the direction of head coach Lisa Provanzano and assistant coach Michele Mattaboni, placed third in the co-ed division with 67.35 points. Sacred Heart defended its title scoring 75.90 points.
