NEW HAVEN — Naugy and Woodland both had notable performances at the indoor track and field state open at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven Saturday.

After a fourth-place finish in the 1,600 meters at the state open, Naugy’s Dan Schumacher will continue his indoor track season.

Schumacher finished fourth in 1,600 with a time of 4:21.38 and qualified for the New England regional meet in Boston on Friday. Since the beginning of the season, Schmacher has dropped nearly 12 seconds off his time in the event.

“He’s progressively getting better at every competition,” Naugy coach Ralph Roper said. “He’s peaking at the right time.”

In addition, Schumacher finished eighth in the 3,200 meters at the state open with a season-best time of 9:36.70.

On the girls side, Woodland broke a school record in the 4-by-400 relay. Haleigh Resnick, Lisa Thrasher, Jazmyn Menzies and Clara Drozdowski finished 11th overall in the event with a time of 4:15.46.

Menzies is the only senior of the group, while the other three girls are juniors.

“Those four girls have a great work ethic, they have pride in what they do and they want to excel,” Woodland girls coach Jeff Lownds said. “They were very focused and we were very pleased.”
