Boys basketball

The Greyhounds improved to 3-0 on the season in dramatic and upset fashion. Naugatuck defeated Wolcott 56-55 Dec. 22 after the Eagles’ Vince Gambino hit a long shot with two seconds left from the corner but it was ruled his toe was on the line. Dayvon Russell led Naugy with 14 points, including two foul shots with 32 seconds left for the winning points. Jason Bradley scored 10 points, including three three-pointers, and C.J. Wall and Fejiro Onakpoma each had nine points. The Greyhounds beat Crosby on Tuesday, 78-71. Jarron Chapman scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Greyhounds to the upset victory over Crosby. Naugatuck will host Oxford Jan. 6 before visiting Holy Cross Jan. 9.

Boys swimming

The Greyhounds have been off for the holidays since facing Woodland Dec. 19. Naugatuck is scheduled to return to the pool Jan. 13 at Seymour.

Indoor track

Naugatuck has been getting into shape on the track at developmental meets as well as at the Hillhouse Winter Relays. The Greyhounds will continue to work on their form Jan. 9 at the McReavy Invitational at Wesleyan University.

Word form the Woods

Boys basketball

The Hawks slipped to 1-3 this week after losses to Platt Tech (71-53) Monday and Wilby (74-69) Tuesday. Sam Merriman scored 16 for the Hawks and Austyn Brown added 15 against Platt Tech. Brown had a game-high 23 points and Merriman had 22 points versus Wilby. Woodland will host Derby Jan. 6 and Bethel Jan. 8 before hitting the road to face Sacred Heart Jan. 9

Boys swimming

Woodland (0-2) has been off for the holidays since facing Naugatuck Dec. 19. The Hawks will host Northwestern Jan. 7 and Kennedy Jan. 9.

Indoor track

Woodland continues putting work in and was scheduled to run in an NVL developmental meet Tuesday, after press time. The Hawks will compete in the Shoreline Coaches Invitational Saturday at Hillhouse.
