Cross Country
The boys started the season where they left off last year, and the girls aren’t far beyond. The boys (3-0) swept a tri-meet Tuesday at Seymour versus Watertown, Sacred Heart and Seymour. The girls (2-1) defeated Sacred Heart and Seymour, but fell to Watertown. On the boys side, Dan Schumacher won the race in 16 minutes, 17 seconds. Brody Hale (second, 16:26), Mark Zamani (third,17:00) and Graden Beasley (fourth, 17:09) were right behind Schumacher as Brandon Thomas (eighth, 18:12) finished in the top ten. On the girls side, Courtney Morin (fourth, 21:50) and Harmony Sturdivent (eighth, 22:44) finished in the top ten. Greyhounds will run in the Stratton Brook Invitational Saturday, before a home meet Tuesday against Torrington, Wolcott, Crosby and Oxford.
Girls Swimming
Naugatuck (1-0) opened the season with an 80-73 win over Kennedy Sept. 12. Event winners included the 200 medley relay team (Meghan Lauer, Olivia Filanowski, Elizabeth Tuscano and Meghan Messier), Cara Rotatori (200 free), Tattiana Serrano (50 free) and Erica Spino (100 fly). Naugatuck hosts its first meet at the newly renovated NHS pool Friday when the Greyhounds take on Watertown.
Volleyball
The Greyhounds (4-1) bounced back from an opening game loss to Woodland by winning their next three games. Naugy defeated Watertown 3-0 Sept. 11. Kara Klimaszewski had 10 service points, five aces, 15 assists and three digs in the win. Megan Warnke added 14 service points, five aces and three digs, while Erika Andreoli had 10 service points to go along with three aces and four digs. Naugatuck beat Holy Cross 3-0 Sept. 12. Klimaszwski had nine service points and 13 assists. Ally Mezzo added five kills, three blocks and service points, while Andreoli had 10 service points and eight digs. The ‘Hounds made it three wins in a row with a 3-2 victory over Torrington Monday. Mezzo had 12 service points and five aces. Nicole Healy and Alexa Blazas added seven kills each. Naugatuck defeated Wilby on Wednesday. The season on the road continues for the Greyhounds Friday at Oxford, Monday at Wolcott and Tuesday at Seymour.

Cross Country
The Hawks started the season fast as the boys and girls swept quad meets against Wolcott, Oxford, Kennedy and Holy Cross Tuesday to open the season 4-0. On the boys side, Jeff Giusto won the race with a time of 17 minutes, 39 seconds. Brian Sardinskas (third,18:05), James Jensen (sixth, 18:57) Matt Giaquinto (eighth,19:02) and Paul Jones (ninth, 19:11) finished in the top ten for Woodland. On the girls side, Kelsey Mitchell finished first in 21 minutes, 22 seconds. Steph Kiley (third, 21:52), Clara Drozdowski (fourth, 22:02), Emilie Noreika (sixth, 22:41), Bianca Poehailos (eighth, 23:56) and Meredith Dyckman (tenth, 24:14) finished in the top ten for Woodland. The Hawks will head to Waterbury Tuesday to face Sacred Heart, St. Paul, Seymour and Wilby.
Girls Swimming
The Hawks (3-0) got the season off to a fast start with an opening 86-69 win over Wilby Sept. 10. Event winners included the 200 medley relay team (Tatianna Lynn, Sarah Bryden, Erin Mascoli, Marissa Johnson), Emma Sardinskas (50 free), Sara Fowler (Diving), Lynn (100 free), Veronica Dergachev (500 free) and the 200 free relay team (Chloe Ariola, Karli Reynolds, Erin Mascoli, Katie Drewry). Woodland followed that up with a 77-67 win over East Haven Sept. 12. Event winners included the 200 medley relay team (Lynn, Morgan Reichard, Bryden and Ariola), Sardinskas (200 free and 100 free) and Fowler (Diving). The Hawks kept the early season success going with a 96-78 win over Holy Cross Tuesday. Event winners included Bryden (50 free), Lauren Lombardo (Diving) and the 200 free relay team (Ariola, Kyla Drewry, Lynn, Sardinskas). Woodland will go on the road to face Torrington Friday and Oxford Tuesday.
Volleyball
Woodland (4-1) defeated Torrington 3-2 Sept. 11. Sam White had 7 kills and six aces, as Abbey Rosato had six kills, six aces and three blocks. Carla Piccolo had 15 assists, five kills and 16 digs, as Cameron Caswell added 38 digs. The Hawks fell to Masuk 3-0 in a non-conference match Sept. 12. Piccolo had three kills and 11 assists. Samantha White added five kills and three aces. Caswell had 17 digs. The Hawks were victorious in another out-of-conference match Sept. 16 beating Nonnewaug 3-0. White had nine kills, one block and one ace as Rosato added eight kills, three aces and three blocks. Anna Khalid added seven kills, one block and two digs. The Hawks swept St. Paul Wednesday. Woodland will hit the road Friday to take on Wolcott, before retuning home Monday to host Amity. The Hawks will then head to Watertown Tuesday.
