Beacon Hose Softball

We’re on the right track after posting a 16-1 loss to Monroe on Monday night. There was plenty of good news to be taken out of our effort, not the least of which was our first run of the season (on Brian DeGeorge’s sac fly to score Jeff Kean in the first inning). We had some shaky defense that caused about 10 unearned runs, but we’re making progress. Sooner or later, we’ll be competitive. Our next game is Monday at 6:30 p.m. against Hotchkiss Hose at Derby’s Bradley School.

Naugy Notes

Baseball

The Greyhounds bounced back from two consecutive losses by pitching a 9-0 shutout Monday against Crosby. Spencer Dreher earned the win by allowing one hit with six strikeouts over four innings, and Evan Pelliccia gained a three-inning save by hurling hitless relief with six strikeouts. Jovanni Torres singled twice and drove in a run, while Adam Tavares had a double and two RBI, and Jason Bradley singled and scored three times. The strong offensive performance came after a pair of shutout losses to Holy Cross and Torrington. Naugy (11-4) fell to undefeated Seymour, 3-1, on Wednesday. The Greyhounds bounced back with a 6-4 victory over Kennedy on Thursday. The Greyhounds will get nearly a week off and will return to action next Wednesday at Wilby.

Softball

After stretching its winning streak to four with a 9-1 win over Crosby on Monday, Naugatuck suffered its first loss in two weeks Tuesday in a 3-0 defeat to unbeaten Torrington. Jenna Miller allowed only five hits with seven strikeouts in the win over the Bulldogs, while Gillian Fortier had two doubles and two RBI. Erika Andreoli notched a hit and three runs, while Kait Barry and Shannon Searles combined to drive in five runs. Naugy’s 3-0 loss to Torrington was its first NVL Copper Division defeat as Fortier’s two doubles were the Greyhounds’ only hits off North Carolina-bound Sydney Matzko. Naugy fell to Seymour, 1-0, Wednesday on the road. Thursday’s game versus Kennedy was postponed to Saturday. The Greyhounds will play five straight games next week, starting Monday at Wolcott.

Track and Field

The Naugatuck girls defeated two of three opponents Tuesday while the Naugy boys were swept in a home quad-meet against Seymour, Wolcott and Holy Cross. The Greyhound girls knocked off Wolcott and Holy Cross but couldn’t top one-loss Seymour. Event winners for the girls included the 4-by-100-meter relay team (Carla Soares, Jasmine Grey, Heyi Cheng, Michaela Rossamando), Cheng (200, 400), Christina Batista (javelin) and the 4-by-400 relay squad (Cheng, Jendaya Bell, Brittany Burkman, Harmony Sturdivant). Event winners for the boys included the 4-by-800 relay team (Tyler Hayward, Brody Hale, Mark Zamani, Graden Beasley) and Dan Schumacher (1,600, 3,200). Naugy will wrap up the regular season Tuesday at home against Wilby and Crosby.

Golf

Naugatuck moved to 7-3 on the season by splitting a home match against Holy Cross and Crosby on Tuesday at Hop Brook. Naugy’s 201 was enough to beat the Bulldogs but short of the Crusaders’ 187. Nick Tribanas shot a 43 to earn the meet’s medal, while Brendan Waldron (51), Tyler Sounanthanam (52) and Jake Alcorace (55) rounded out the scoring. The Greyhounds will remain home Monday against Torrington before visiting Wolcott on Tuesday.

Word from the Woods

Baseball

Woodland snapped out of a 1-5 stretch Monday with a 12-2 beating of Kennedy at Waterville Park. Matt Butterworth smacked four hits and scored three times to lead the Hawks’ offense, while Tanner Kingsley and Sam Merriman each had two hits and three RBI. Tyler Boisvert surrendered only one hit and no runs while striking out seven in five innings of work on the mound. The performance was a rebound after two narrow losses to Derby and St. Paul, and it lifted Woodland back to .500 at 6-6. The Hawks fell back under .500 with a 11-5 loss to Torrington on Wednesday. Woodland will host Wolcott on Friday. Woodland will play its first night game Monday at Ansonia.

Softball

A five-game winning streak has Woodland back on track after an earlier hiccup of two losses in three outings. Carla Piccolo singled, scored and drove in a run to help the Hawks improve to 11-2 on the season. Other victories during the winning streak came over Wilby, Ansonia, St. Paul and Derby. The streak came to an end as the Hawks fell to undefeated Torrington, 4-0, on Wednesday. Woodland travels to Wolcott on Friday evening and returns home Monday against Ansonia.

Golf

Woodland’s best season in nearly a decade continued Monday with a pair of victories over Torrington and Crosby at Oxford Greens. Mike Erickson was the medalist by firing a 40, while every Hawk shot in the 40s. Ryan Warner and Andy O’Dell posted matching 46s, while Zach Crowell carded a 47 to account for a team total of 179. The solid outing Monday followed a near-miss against Wolcott last Friday at Farmingbury Hills, where the Hawks came just three strokes shy of beating the usually strong Eagles. Erickson’s even-par 34 earned the meet’s medal, while Warner (43), Owen Harris (47) and Crowell (48) all came in under 50. Woodland remained hot by beating Sacred Heart, 179-184, Thursday. Erickson’s 36 earned the meet’s medal. The Hawks will play at Watertown on Monday before returning home to face Holy Cross on Tuesday.
