Alumni to play inaugural Ruccio Scholarship Game

NAUGATUCK — The first Josh Ruccio Scholarship Alumni Game will be played Jan. 4 at Naugatuck High School.

Ruccio died suddenly Jan. 16, 2012 at the age of 35. Ruccio was a fixture on the Naugatuck sports scene for more than 20 years. He played baseball and basketball at the high school, coached at every level of youth sports in the borough and also served as vice president of the Naugatuck Hall of Fame.

The alumni basketball game will feature “old school” alumni, players that played with Ruccio at one time, versus “new school” alumni, players that Ruccio coached or played while he was a coach. Mike Wilson, Billy Kane, Joey Edmunds and Ken Stone will represent the old school, while Anthony Mariano, Joe Iannotti, Jon Mariano, Sydney Cotto and Brett Hayward will represent the new school.

Tickets to the game are $5 each and are being sold by players and coaches. Seating is limited. The doors open at 5 p.m. Jan. 4 and the game tips off at 6 p.m.

The proceeds will benefit the Josh Ruccio Scholarship Fund, which has awarded eight, $500 scholarships in two years.
