NAUGATUCK — Sibby’s Automotive pitchers tossed 18 straight scoreless innings in three victories earlier this month to take home the Naugatuck Babe Ruth title.
Nick Soucy won two of the games — including a 1-0 complete-game victory over B&G Sports — to reach the championship round. Soucy also won the clincher in an 11-2 win over Brown’s Roofing in the best-of-three title round.
“I was in awe of our pitching,” Sibby’s coach Dennis Sigetti said. “We had some great defense, too. It was fun to watch.”
Soucy struck out 10, gave up five hits and walked three over seven innings. He also scored the only run of the game on a Cody Sigetti single in the fourth.
In a game of little offense, Zach Monk reached base on all three plate appearances, while Soucy, Tyler Suarez, Jordan Carreira and Zach Matthieu chipped in with hits for Sibby’s.
Conor White led B&G Sports with two walks and a single. Also earning hits were Brendan Caldwell, Colton Roberts, Evan Bomber, Colin Sheedy and Corey Grohs, who gave his team a chance to win on the mound.
Brown’s Roofing beat Naugatuck Valley Savings and Loan to make the championship.
Sibby’s won Game 1, 6-0 over Brown’s. Evan Pelliccia dominated on the mound with eight strikeouts in the seven-inning performance.
Pelliccia and Suarez paced the offense with two hits and two runs scored each. Matthieu also had two hits for Sibby’s and scored a run. Tyler McGovern and Soucy had one hit apiece.
Brown’s Roofing had a good pitching performance by Ray Blair, who gave up only two runs over the first five innings before Sibby’s broke through in the sixth. Brown’s hits were by Blair and Dave Kearns.
In Game 2, Soucy again was brilliant on the mound. He allowed two runs on three hits.
Sibby’s scored eight runs in the first inning, led at the plate by Pelliccia (three singles, two runs), Cody Sigetti (hit, two walks, sac fly), Suarez (three hits), Matthieu (two hits, walk), McGovern (two hits) and Monk (two walks).
Pelliccia and Cody Sigetti won two titles in three years, which were broken up by a loss in last year’s championship game.
“I am very happy and proud to have been able to coach these fine young men,” Dennis Sigetti said. “I’m going to miss them next season.”
Jordan Andreozzi and Troy Poppel scored Brown’s two runs.
Sibby’s was coached by Dennis Sigetti, Rick Pelliccia and Dan Monk.
