SportsFillerWebThe Union City Little League All-Stars defeated Peter J. Foley, 8-5, to open the Major Baseball Division (11-12-year-olds) District 3 tournament last weekend.

Matt Pimpinelli tossed a complete-game performance to lead UCLL, which was scheduled to face Shelton National Little League in a winner’s bracket game on Wednesday evening, after press time.

“The kids practiced hard all week, two and a half hours a day,” UCLL manager Dennis Sigetti said. “They wanted to make a statement.”

Mikey Patton and Ross Via had two hits each for UCLL, while Nate Shulick, Jonathan Vincent, Mark Nofri, Elliott Via and Dawson Sigetti all chipped in with one hit apiece.

Matt Imperotti homered for Foley, while Nate Deptula had two hits and was robbed of a third by a nice catch from UCLL right fielder Ryan McCarthy. Derek Sampaio, James Bilsky and Nick Bruno also had hits for Foley.

Foley is scheduled to face Robert A. Cole Little League in an elimination game on Wednesday night.

Beacon Falls is 1-1 in the tournament with a loss to Seymour on June 27 and a win over Derby on Monday.

Zach Bedryczuk allowed two runs, five hits and struck out seven in a hard-luck 2-0 loss to Seymour. Albert Pangrac, III had two hits, while Zach Bennard and Tyler Tomasella had one each to account for Beacon Falls’ knocks.

In the win over Derby, Beacon Falls used a four-run first inning to take control. Justin Butterworth started the rally with a leadoff walk, then Justin Marks, Pangrac, Kyle Macek and Jason Hicks had hits to produce runs.

“We were happy for the boys,” Beacon Falls manager Bill Butterworth said. “We were proud of their hustle, team spirit and the confidence they have in themselves.”

Pangrac struck out nine to earn the win for Beacon Falls.

Prospect Little League lost its first game to Seymour, 6-3, and is slated to face Ansonia on Wednesday in an elimination game. If Prospect wins, it will play Saturday at 10 a.m. in Beacon Falls against the loser of the UCLL-SNLL game.

The winner of the PJF-RACBL game will play Saturday at 12:15 p.m. in Beacon Falls against the loser of the Seymour-Shelton American game.

Should Union City beat Shelton National on Wednesday, it will face the winner of the Seymour-Shelton American game Monday in Shelton. Two wins by Prospect, Robert A. Cole or Peter J. Foley will allow them to also play Monday night in Shelton.
