NAUGATUCK — Mr. Peter J. Varney, 83, of Naugatuck, passed away Monday morning June 11, 2012 at the Waterbury Hospital.

Pete was born in London, England, June 29, 1928, a son of the late George E. and Florence (Prentice) Varney and came to this country in 1952. He was a former Middlebury resident, moving to Naugatuck in 1985. He was a peacetime veteran of the British Army and was stationed in Burma. He was a toolmaker and retired employee of Bridgeport Brass and Seymour Specialty Wire Co.

Pete was an active volunteer in many local organizations; he served as head of the kitchen clean-up for the Conference of Churches Christmas Day Dinner program for over 20 years, volunteered with the United Methodist Church Thanksgiving Dinner program for nine years, worked with the “Breakfast with Santa” program since 1998, the St. Michael’s Episcopal Church Thanksgiving Dinner program and was a weekly volunteer with the Ecumenical Food Bank for the past 14 years. He was also a volunteer at the Naugatuck High School “Coat Giveaway” program since its inception.

He leaves one son, Jessie Hanson and one daughter Lenora Thomas, both of Middlebury; three grandchildren, Katlin Thomas, Ryan Thomas and David Thomas and his wife Melissa.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Edward Varney, Winifred Lightfoot, Irene Coffey, and Dorothy Bunker.

His funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. at the Alderson Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 5 p.m. until the time of the service.
