Josephine Modzelewski

Josephine S. (Piurkowski) Modzelewski died on March 20.  She was the widow of Jacob Modzelewski.

Born in Ashuelot, N.H. on April 23, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Genowefa (Perlosky) Piurkowski.  As a child Josephine moved with her family to Poland where she resided until the age of 18, then returned to New Hampshire with her brothers.  She retired from Lewis Engineering and then resided with her daughter Evelyn.

In addition to her role as a factory worker, mother and grandmother, Josephine was a well known neighborhood fixture in Union City.  She was known to generations at the local school next door, Hop Brook, where Josephine could be found donating items, cleaning up the playground and taking long walks.  She loved to crochet and make knitted slippers for everyone.  These acts of kindness were matched only by the love and devotion she gave to all her family and friends.

Josephine is survived by her two daughters and a son-in-law, Evelyn Modzelewski of Union City, Mary Jane and John Lynch of Kensington, her grandson Mark Modzelewski and his wife Kelly of Somerville, Mass., three sisters in Poland, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her two brothers Joseph and Stanley Piurkowski.

A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 25 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Hedwig Church, 32 Golden Hill St., Naugatuck.  Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck. There are no calling hours.

The Kenney-Luddy funeral home, New Britain, is in charge of arrangements.
