Letter: Fundraising efforts have changed

To the editor,

In the past, social groups would raise money by selling a service or some product. Remember Boy Scouts raking leaves or shoveling snow, with the Girl Scouts selling their famous cookies.  But now things have changed. In my community we have all sorts of children’s social groups raising money by simply standing in front of supermarkets and every donut shop waving their empty buckets in front of the customers.

This is simply panhandling. It must be a sign of our times. Just stand there with your hands outstretched asking, “Where are my freebies?”

The last of those willing to provide a service were the kids doing car washes. But we seldom see those anymore. Are we seriously trying to lead our kids into a social welfare state? I’m afraid the answer is yes.
