NAUGATUCK — Local organizations are scrambling to find new venues since a local banquet hall closed this month.

The Continental Room closed Aug. 1 after over 30 years catering for weddings, anniversaries, showers, funerals, retirements and other events.

The venue at 1006 New Haven Road is owned by St. Vincent Ferrer Roman Catholic Church, but was leased to Carol Piel-Fragoso and George Carrah.

The Archdiocese of Hartford did not respond to questions about the future of the building Wednesday.

Naugatuck Woman’s Club President Laura Smith said her group held its monthly luncheons there for about 20 years.

“We had a wonderful time. The caterers were fantastic to us. We always, always got along there. That’s why we stayed so long. It was great working with them,” Smith said.

She said the owners told her they were getting out of the catering business when they called to let her know they were closing.

Piel-Fragoso and Carrah could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

The Woman’s Club will move its meetings to the American Legion Hall at 21 Cedar St. in Naugatuck.

The next meeting is at 11 a.m. Sept. 11. Guests are welcome, but must make a reservation by calling 203-729-4263. The buffet is $13.50 for members. The deadline to send a check to Smith for the buffet is Aug. 25.

The meeting will include music from the 1940s to the 1960s by Pat Santucci.
