Obituary: Verna A. Blackwell

CROMWELL — Verna A. Blackwell, 95, formerly of Naugatuck, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at Pilgrim Manor of Cromwell. She was the wife of the late Dana J. Blakwell.

Mrs. Blackwell was born June 28, 1922 in Waterbury, the daughter of the late Freidolf and Anna (Nelson) Anderson. She was a longtime Naugatuck resident where she was an active member of the Hillside Covenant Church serving on many committees, singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She was a teacher in the Naugatuck school system for many years until her retirement in the mid-1950s from Hop Brook School. She was a member of the Woman’s Study club in Naugatuck and a founding member of the Naugatuck Historical Society.

She is survived by her sister, Avis Anderson of Red Bank, N.J.; her brother, Duane Anderson of Cromwell; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 9, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Hillside Covenant Church, 100 Hillside Ave., Naugatuck. A graveside service will be held in Grove Cemetery on Friday, July 7, 2017 at 10 a.m. There are no calling hours. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Naugatuck is assisting with arrangements.
