NAUGATUCK — The Naugatuck Community Emergency Response Team is looking for new members and is scheduling a free CERT member basic training class.

CERT educates people in disaster preparedness for events that may impact their area and provides basic disaster response skills. Using the training, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event and assist professional responders. CERT members are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in projects in their community.

The 20-hour FEMA-approved basic course includes training in such areas as disaster preparedness, medical operations, light search and rescue and fire suppression. Once basic training is complete, members will be trained in areas such as CPR-AED, shelter management, traffic incident management and other classes that will prepare members to assist in time of emergency incidents and natural disasters.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Naugatuck Community Emergency Response Team can request an application by sending an email to CERT@Naugatuck-CT.gov. Applications are also available at the mayor’s office, Town Hall, 229 Church St.

CERT is a volunteer division of the Naugatuck Office of Emergency Management & Homeland Security.
