NAUGATUCK — Grace Lutheran Church will celebrate the Earth with family activities and information from local conservation groups on Sunday.

The 11th annual Earth Day celebration on the Town Green will showcase stewardship from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event coincides with the Naugatuck Chamber of Commerce’s Duck Day and Race, which brings thousands of people downtown.

Robin Bennett, who is coordinating the event with Melissa Leonard, said Naugatuck used to have an Earth Day celebration on Earth Day, April 22, but the weather didn’t cooperate most of the time. By holding the event on Duck Day, she said it benefits from all the people already in the area.

“It’s been something that people just kind of stumble upon,” Bennett said.

She said the church sponsors the event to give back to the community, highlight earth-friendly practices and raise awareness about environmental causes.

“It’s really to make people aware of what they can do to help protect the environment,” Bennett said.

The event will feature face painting, crafts, recycling games, free snow cones, and free raffles for healthy food baskets.

There will be several opportunities to learn about conservation, recycling, healthy lifestyles and how to save money at the same time, according to Bennett.

The church is holding the celebration in partnership with the Borough’s Conservation Commission.

Other local environmentally minded groups including the Naugatuck River Revival Group, White Memorial Conservation Center and the CT Appalachian Mountain Club will be on hand to share their knowledge and expertise on how to serve as good stewards of the planet.

Bennett said the event will include about 10 vendors.
