NAUGATUCK — Antonio V. Nunes, 88, the husband of Balbina (Fernandes) Nunes, died peacefully on Monday, May 22, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Antonio was born on Sept. 2, 1928 in Torreira, Portugal, a son of the late Antonio M. Vieira and Amelia N. Pereira, and had lived in Naugatuck for most of his life. Antonio worked for over 35 years at the chemical division of Uniroyal, Inc., was a founding member of Our Lady of Fatima Church and was presently the longest standing member of the Clube Uniao Portuguesa. Antonio loved spending time with his family, visiting with his son at Tony’s Men’s Shop in Waterbury, boating and fishing and following the NHS boys soccer team, coached by his son Arthur.

In addition to his wife of 64 years, Antonio is survived by his sons, Arthur Nunes and his wife, Leonor, Antonio Nunes, Jr. and his wife, Toni, Joe Nunes and his wife, Manuela; his grandchildren, Justin Nunes, Stacey Meister and her husband, Jason, Christina Nunes, Felisha Nunes and Caitlyn Nunes; his great-grandchildren, Alyson and Ashley Meister, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Antonio was predeceased by two brothers, Joaquim and Jose, and two sisters, Amelia and Adelaide.

The Nunes family would like to sincerely thank Bridget from Hartford Health Care, Hospice at Home, as well as caregivers Victoria, Elsa, Helena, Debbie and Carmen for the excellent care that they provided.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, May 25, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin St., Waterbury. Everyone is kindly asked to go directly to church. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck. Calling hours are Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck.
