NAUGATUCK — The deadline to submit petitions to force a referendum on Naugatuck’s municipal and school budgets came and went Monday without anyone submitting petitions.
Borough officials adopted a $120.4 million budget for the 2017-18 fiscal year earlier this month. The school budget makes up more than half of total spending at nearly $61.7 million, which is the same spending level for education as this fiscal year and the year before.
Residents had until 4 p.m. on Monday to force the budgets to a referendum, but no one did so, and the budget went through unchallenged.
Overall, the budget is decreasing $492,296 from this fiscal year’s budget. However, the mill rate will increase 0.88 mills, or about 1.8 percent, to 48.55 mills due to less revenue.
Under a 48.55 mill rate, a taxpayer with property assessed at $150,000 would pay $7,282 in taxes, an increase of $132. A mill is $1 for every $1,000 of assessed property value.
